Mr. Cole began his company in 1982 in New York City, with the ambition to open a shoe store. He did not have the resources to open a shopfront and did not believe the alternative - renting a room to sell shoes from the Hilton - would be profitable. Instead parked a 40-foot trailer in Midtown Manhattan and launched his first shoe show, which sold out of stock in just 2 days.
