It was named after Samuel Hood an 18th-century admiral and was the lead ship of its class. The Hood had a distinguished service history including its involvement in the Norway Campaign during World War II.However the ship is perhaps most well-known for its tragic end during the Battle of the Denmark Strait on May 24th 1941. During the battle the Hood was engaged in combat with the German battleship Bismarck when it was hit by a shell in its ammunition magazine. The resulting explosion tore the ship in half and only three of the 1418 crew members survived.The sinking of the HMS Hood was a significant blow to the British Navy as it was the largest and most powerful ship in the fleet at the time.
