Novica Wood Sculpture, 'Odo Mask'
Description
Hand-carved from sese wood, this sculpture depicts a mask of a stunning woman. Ghanaian designer Rita Addo Zakour names this original sculpture Odo, an Akan word meaning 'love'. The woman's face is accentuated with pronounced red lips and eyes and she wears a prominent headdress. Her face is adorned with embossed aluminum plating and sits on a rectangular base. I am a designer by profession. I do my designing with African concepts in mind. Yes, my work has changed. I think it gets better as the years go by. The basic materials I use are soft wood - sese and aluminum sheets. I carve wood - sese, dry it, stain it, sandpaper it with both rough and smooth sandpaper, apply white clay to dry, and lastly put polish. I took Art in high school, and I think I have the flair for designs. What inspires me is to have the edge of doing more designs. The greatest challenge I have faced in my life is when my employees don't do exactly what they are suppose to do. I taught some students and some of my employees. I think NOVICA makes it possible to sell my works to appreciators, world - wide through the internet. My work has been exhibited in my workshop. I haven't received any award yet. What I will like to say to NOVICA customers is that almost all the things I do are hand made, so they should not look for perfection. All merchandise should stay away from wet or steamy areas. My favorite things in life is cooking and being with my family. The dreams that I have for my future is to have enough so I can also give back to others. I live with my husband and daughter.
